This is the website for Luke Galea.
I finished my PhD at the Institute of Linguistics-Phonetics, University of Cologne, Germany in June 2016. My PhD was funded by the a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School of Humanities, University of Cologne, Germany.
My PhD project was about syllable structure and phonotactic constraints in Maltese, as well as gemination in Maltese. My dissertation is the first large-scale empirical study on gemination in Maltese. Furthermore, I attempted to describe the phonetics and phonology of gemination (in all positions in the word) from a typological perspective. I also investigated the perception of word-initial geminates in Maltese. My PhD dissertation was supervised by Dr. Martine Grice (University of Cologne), Dr. Albert Gatt (Utrecht University)) and Dr. Adam Ussishkin (University of Tucson, Arizona).
My interests lie in the phonetics and phonology interface mainly involving consonant clusters, the syllable, and syllabification.
In 2022, I completed a Masters in English Studies at the University of Sheffield, where I focused on the contemporary poetry. My MA dissertation was on Louise Glück’s A Village Life.
I am currently working as a Senior Teaching Associate at the Centre for Academic Literacies and English Communication Skills at the University of Malta.
I am also a poet and poet-translator. I have translated poems from English to Maltese and they have been published in Leħen il-Malti. Furthermore, my translation of Nadia Mifsud’s poem into English can be read on Modern Poetry in Translation. I have recently published a poem in the collection Antoloġija 24 by Kotba Calleja.
